Feature:  A global collaboration

Who are the people who want to build the International Linear Collider? They are accelerator and particle physicists, engineers, theorists, technicians, students, software experts, administrators and economists from all corners of the world. They are united by one goal: find answers to physics' big questions by building the next-generation particle accelerator, the ILC, to accompany the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The ILC is a demonstrably global project, involving thousands of scientists from the Americas, Asia and Europe in accelerator activity, detector research and physics pursuits. Discover the interactive ILC map, a picture of ILC activity around the world.

A visit to the two candidate Japanese ILC sites

The Japanese have identified two candidate sites for the ILC, one in southern and one in northern Japan. On 17 and 18 January, several senior members of the ILC design team had the opportunity to visit them. Barry Barish gives his impressions following the visit to both sites.Read the director's corner in ILC NewsLine

The capability for producing niobium sheets

Japanese company Tokyo Denkai is boosting high-purity niobium production and processing with some new equipment and a better-outfitted shop. Should the ILC be built, the company will be able to handle the large order of niobium needed for accelerator cavities.Read ILC NewsLine

ILC detector design report in the making

The main task in 2012 for the ILC physics and detector community is to complete Detailed Baseline Design report summarising their effort since 2007. To achieve this goal, coordination between the detector groups and with the Global Design Effort is essential. Read the research director's report in ILC NewsLine

Snipping showers

Two German PhD students built a test device that is supposed to get behind the precise timing of particle showers, making it possible for the physicists to tell which reaction originated from which collision.Read ILC NewsLine

Goals for 2012

A major accomplishment last year was the evaluation and approval of a new ILC baseline that has been more optimised for cost, performance and risk. The Global Design effort is now completing the design details and embarking on producing the ILC Technical Design Report by the end of this year.Read the director's corner in ILC NewsLine
