Linear collider detector development

I have just attended the CLIC09 workshop at CERN and am writing this column in the plane on the way back home. The number of registrants was about 250 from more than 20 countries, of which the attendance to the physics and detector sessions was about 50. The workshop was the third in the series, and attendance by the ILC community has been increasing each time. I acted as a convener of the physics and detector working group. It was not a participation as a regional contact of the ILC research directorate; nonetheless, I would like to share some information with readers of the ILC NewsLine.

CALICE collaboration enters new phase

Just after the ILC concept detector validation report was released, the CALICE (Calorimeter for the linear collider experiment) Collaboration met from 16 to 18 September in Lyon, France. This meeting was the place of lively discussions on the most recent test beam results and strategies for the R&D and studies for the future as the collaboration is entering now a crucial and intense new phase. It was the most attended CALICE meeting ever and nearly all participating countries were represented.

ILCSC grapples with moving the Linear Collider forward

The International Linear Collider Steering Committee (ILCSC), a subcommittee of the International Committee for Future Accelerators (ICFA), held their biannual meeting on 19 August during the Hamburg Lepton Photon Conference. ILCSC provides scientific and technical oversight for the ILC accelerator and detector R&D and design efforts. The August meeting was particularly busy, as ILCSC dealt with issues varying from the validation of the letters of intent (LOI) for the detectors to ILC-CLIC collaboration to developing efforts on governance and siting. This was the final meeting chaired by Enzo Iarocci, who will be replaced by Jon Bagger, Johns Hopkins University, who also participated in this meeting.

Bill Willis receives highest honour from Yale Graduate School
Bill Willis, chair of the ILC's Accelerator Advisory Panel, received the Wilbur Lucius Cross Medal from the Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences on 6 October. The medal was also awarded to three other Yale alumni for "outstanding achievement"; Willis received it for "his wide-ranging experiments" that have been "central to his evolving field. He has also been an outstanding scientific administrator at national and international laboratories, including Brookhaven National Laboratory, the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, and CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research). He has served on many international scientific advisory panels and now chairs the Research and Development Board for the International Linear Collider."
